The purpose of TOEFL is to evaluate the English proficiency of applicants, whose native language is not English. TOEFL scores are required for purposes of admission by more than 4,400 colleges and universities worldwide. In addition, government agencies, scholarship programmes, licensing agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

The computer based TOEFL test has four sections:

STRUCTURE measures the ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.

READING measures the ability to understand short passages similar in topic and style to academic texts used in North American colleges and universities. A better vocabulary is required to score well.
WRITING measures the ability to write a well organised essay in English on an assigned topic.
Proficiency in grammar, vocabulary and cohesion in ideas will fetch you better marks.
