A Word of Introduction

Dr. Cyriac Thomas
The Former Vice-Chancellor Mahatma Gandhi University Kerala

Language and literature combine to make one of the best gifts God has given to mankind. Proper use of any language has its own charm and beauty. Teaching languages is an art and learning a language is a blessing.

The book, written by the learned author, Mr. George John, seems to me a book with a difference in the field of IELTS and TOEFL. The various modes used by the author, in his earnest endeavour to help the users of the book, are commendable. The scope of the book is not limited to both professionals and students. It provides enough and ample opportunities for anyone who desires to learn the language royale.

I am sure this unique piece of work will mark a new experience in the art and science of learning English. Seriously used and correctly approached, the book by Mr.George John will prove to be a true treasure and a real blessing for those pilgrims and devotees who enter the precincts of the temple of the Goddess of Knowledge.

Mr. B. S. Warrier states:

(Columnist for ‘The Hindu’, ‘The New Indian Express’ etc.
Retd. Jt. Director of Technical Education, Kerala.)

“This book is different from those we find elsewhere. You have broken new grounds to help students who aspire to gain proficiency in the English language for functional requirements. This is a useful handbook. You have put in substantial effort in bringing out this comprehensive volume and you must have enjoyed a unique sense of fulfilment.”

Success must be sought after. It is by choice.

Success is by the right choice. It must be sought after. All are born equal but only a few succeed. To emerge victorious, in the midst of aggressive materialism and spiritual vacuum, one has to be rational, assertive and proactive.

To deal tactfully with the vicissitudes of life, one has to be positive in approach, emotionally intelligent and futuristic in outlook. The Mittals, the Tatas, the Ambanies, the Narayana Murthys, the Bill Gates would all have been consigned to oblivion, had they not subscribed to industry, futuristic views and emotional intelligence.

Times have changed. Today a strong wind of change is sweeping our nation. The developed nations like the U.S, the U.K, Canada, Australia etc, are in dire need of highly competent personnel. These nations prefer Indian professionals because of their theoretical base, creativity, consistency and strong value system. Our Doctors, Engineers, Nurses and professionals in IT are of global reputation. BPO firms and Call Centres, both at home and abroad, have been welcoming our smart industrious youngsters who are adept at English, offering them lucrative salaries and perquisites. Today our youngsters rub shoulders even with the best of the West, for the rat race has become a reality.

Proficiency in English is synonymous with success. It is the language royale of business, science, technology, medicine, higher education, the Internet and anything transnational. The salad days of the third millennium demand good command of English. Doors are wide open to those who are good at English. If you think you can, you can.

Globalization is making its presence felt everywhere. The Internet has brought about the death of time and space. National barriers are being removed. Individualism, consumerism, human and animal rights, cohabitation and aggressive feminism have all made the world different. New values are creeping in. Amid all these labyrinthine complexities and contradictory priorities, let us try to be proactive. Life is to live and to let live. It is debatable whether we are on the path of progress or regression, for violence is the perceivable order of the day. The amassing of riches by hook or by crook has become the order of the day. Although the earth has everything for everybody’s needs, she has not enough for just one person’s greed. The employment landscape and the work culture have become very complex. Jobs are there, but for the competent.

In the job scenario, competence means the totality of integrity, leadership qualities, emotional intelligence, soft skills, team spirit etc. Gone are the days when job opportunities were confined to one’s own nation. In this age of LPG (Liberalisation,Privatisation, Globalisation) jobs are aplenty. But are we smart enough to transcend the mediocrity

If you lapse, you need not collapse. The secret of success is consistency of purpose and an intense faith in one’s own strengths. Never look back, but pursue your cherished goal with steadfast enthusiasm and an unwavering faith in your own self, to carve a niche for yourself. Procrastination is the thief of time. Every moment matters. Let us not procrastinate, but be proactive, for fortune favours the industrious.

This book is the outcome of our conscientious effort combined with 10 years of experience, in imparting quality training for IELTS, TOEFL, NCLEX-RN, MOH exams besides Group Discussion, Interview Skills, English Fluency etc. Many job aspirants of India in general, are not self-motivated nor are they successful in keeping themselves abreast of the ever-changing trends of this highly sophisticated world, for they read less and interact little. It is time we changed with the times to be globally competent.

A systematic study and getting guidance from experienced faculty are factors which make the studious to succeed in IELTS and TOEFL. An in-depth knowledge of grammar, the required stock of vocabulary and factual content are the pre-requisites to excel in the ‘Writing’ Module. To score well in the ‘Reading’ Module, a better analytical brain to read between the lines comes in handy. To perform well in the ‘Speaking’ Module, a good command of the spoken language, creativity coupled with gestures to radiate confidence and a proper intonation are inevitable.

Above all these, a proper awareness of the pattern of the exam and the tips to score well , will equip you for the task. We have taken every effort to give this book a comprehensive nature, to enable you to face the exam with a smile and come out with flying colours.

Industry invites success. “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars”, Shakespeare asserts. Let’s aim at the stars, so that we may reach the sky. Success is by the right choice.

Let me reiterate: Success must be sought after in the rat race, for it embraces but a few.

Sir,

Your book is great. I, being a tutor for IELTS & TOEFL, find this a great tool for students to have a comprehensive exposure to various aspects of IELTS, especially, Graph, Essay Writing and Reading. Your tips on each module are excellent. To learn grammar and to enrich word power my students are using your book.

Since I get only one month to train a batch, I advise them to use this book for additional exercises on Reading, Speaking and Writing. Your venture is commendable.
